Although there are scares every 20–30 years about running out of crude oil, the industry has so far developed new technology to discover and produce new resources as needed. Production in United States recently rose rapidly after decades of decline due to production deep off-shore and from source rocks and interbedded strata (tight oil). Even as production rises in North America, its usage is slowly declining in North America and Eurasia, largely counterbalancing its increase in other parts of the world. Natural gas supplies the largest amount of energy in Eurasia by a small margin over oil, and the gap is quickly closing in North America. Worldwide, coal recently closed the gap with oil as the largest energy source, but perhaps has peaked; natural gas is increasing in parallel with oil, as shown in Fig., which was plotted from the 2016 BP statistical world energy data workbook.
